Simplify & Abstract: Landscape in Oil

This class is an opportunity to learn valuable lessons while painting Telluride and discover techniques to simplify and organize your outdoor painting. Karen will guide participants in learning how the harmonious palette works with an emphasis on color temperatures and compliments. Students will come away with a clear understanding of color as well as composition skills, creating a simple design structure for oil painting, using the studio and the gorgeous outdoor Telluride scenery.
Karen Weihs, a Charleston, SC native, started showcasing her paintings in the family restaurants before establishing a gallery in Charleston in 1995. She credits Franck Licciardi and Andrew Peters for her vision and love of painting and understanding of color. Plein Air Pastel Impressions

This class dives head first into pastel painting and plein air techniques through the experiences of watching (demonstrations by Barnes) and doing (painting on location). Students receive a broad spectrum of art instruction, providing a rich experience for artists of all skill levels. Barnes teaches during the demonstrations by thoroughly explaining every step of his process – from deciding on subject matter and composing the scene to a nearly finished painting. The instruction continues with individual help alongside your easel during every scheduled plein air painting session. Along with the pastel techniques, students are exposed to compositional, value, and color theories that, when applied, will continue to teach well after class completion.

Oriental Metals

This course introduces participants to processes of working metals common to Asia. Harold will introduce students to mokume-gane, married metals, Japanese alloys and coloring processes. This five-day workshop is intensive! Students will alloy the metals to make mokume and pattern it, combining various colored metals into designs for rings, pins and earrings. Special metals will be available from the instructor. Bring hand tools if you have them.
Educated in the United States, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Austria and Mexico, Harold O’Connor has been a Goldsmith and teacher for over 40 years. He is the author of The Jeweler’s Bench Reference and The Flexible Shaft Machine – Jewelry Techniques. He has facilitated over 200 workshops in 14 countries including Portugal, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Canadian Artic and Peru. Surface Embellishments

Students will learn the art of creasing, folding, hollow construction, reticulation, fine gold-over-sterling silver lamination and roller embossing. Efficient studio methods and flexible shaft machine uses will be taught. Gold and silver granulation will also be introduced. Space is limited so sign up early.

Paint with Flame: Raku Techniques

Five days, Friday - Sunday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Class will take place at the Ah Haa School
During the first weekend of the workshop, there will be a demonstration of wheel and hand-building techniques as well as the formulation and firing of new raku glazes in preparation for the second
weekend workshop. Students will be able to create a few pieces to be fired for the second week of the workshop and will learn to create new glazes, glaze coloration and surface treatments. Discussions and slides will cover potential relationships between surface and form, developing more expressive glaze techniques and achieving enhanced results with the raku kiln and reduction. The weekend will conclude with a discussion about the finished work of each student and how it can be further developed.

Pastel Painting: Studio Landscapes

Pastels offer a unique bridge between drawing and painting. For a painter who loves color, the directness of the heavily pigmented pastel stick to paper is intoxicating. Doug Dawson will help you discover and develop your own personal style. Each day begins with a demonstration, illustrating one of the two basic approaches to painting. Doug provides a continuous monologue explaining his thought process in pastel painting. After the demonstration, students are given the remaining time to try their hand at the skills illustrated. He also provides individual instruction for each student based upon need.
Doug Dawson is a celebrated member of the American Watercolor Society, the Pastel Society of the Southwest, The Knickerbocker Artists (New York) and the Pastel Society of America. His work has been included in prestigious exhibitions with the Charles and Emma Frye Art Museum, Seattle, WA (a one person show); the Denver Art Museum; the Heritage Museum, Norfolk, Virginia; the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; the Hunter Museum of American Art Chattanooga, TN and the Societe Des Pastellistes de France International Exhibition Palais Rameau, Lille, France.

Making A Strong Photograph

Class will take place at the Ah Haa School
Just in time for the splendor of fall colors, Dave Edwards, famous for his Kazakh Eagle Hunter series for National Geographic Magazine, will lead a three-day photographic workshop. Dynamic compositions, light, subject content, and the artistic elements of an image will be his main topics. There also will be an emphasis on changing photographic habits, seeing with new eyes and experimentation. Starting with an introduction and slide show on Thursday evening, the workshop will continue for two full days of shooting and a lecture on Friday and Saturday, and end on Sunday at noon after more shooting and critique.
Dave Edwards has been a freelance photographer for over 20 years and a river guide in the Grand Canyon for 30 years. He has worked as a photographer and guide in Africa, Alaska, Chile, Bolivia, China, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, and throughout the Southwestern U.S. His work has appeared in numerous national and international publications.
