Ceramic Mold Making with Julie McNair

Detail work in clay is wonderful but time consuming. This four-session class will introduce students to mold making and how to use molded forms to quickly enhance projects. Julie McNair will instruct students on press molds, one-piece molds, two-piece molds and creating forms for mold-making. We will also learn and practice how to press clay and/or cast a mold. Working on a small scale, students will complete the class with three molds and if time allows, a project using the first two molds.

Students will have instructed sessions with Julie McNair on Wednesdays and Fridays from 4-7PM and have the choice to attend optional, uninstructed open studio sessions on Saturdays from 12-4PM. 

Class 1: Introduction of press mold making and usage. Create or select form for one-piece mold with discussion of natural draft and how mold can be used.

Class 2: Make one-piece mold in plaster.

Class 3: Make form for two-piece mold. Press or cast one-piece mold.

Class 4: Make two-piece mold in plaster that includes a sprue and key(s)

This class is part of Fall For Art! Consider the regular class value of $275 and pay what you can. Choosing to pay more than the class value subsidizes these classes for others.

Acerca del artista

ulie McNair received her M.F.A in sculpture from the University of Wyoming. Before moving to Telluride, she was an assistant professor of ceramics and sculpture at Mississippi State University. For 17 years she owned and operated Telluride’s East End Gallery, which she sold in 2003 to concentrate on making art. Julie is currently represented in Dallas, Tucson, and Telluride at Telluride Gallery of Fine Arts, for whom she frames part time, as well. Julie’s clay classes have been popular at Ah Haa for years while she has served the school in a variety of roles
