Description

Explore the colorful world of screen printing with local expert Kathy Green. This hands-on workshop will guide you through the “breakdown” screen printing method, employing thickened fiber reactive dyes to produce distinctive, vibrant designs on a variety of fabrics.

Over the course of the workshop, you will discover and practice techniques such as stenciling, stamping, painting, and shibori bucket dyeing. A fundamental part of the class will focus on building visual texture, where you will learn to create intricate layers of design and color to bring your fabric to life.

This workshop is designed to accommodate a wide range of fabric types, including protein fibers like silk and wool, as well as cellulose fibers such as cotton, linen, and hemp. You will be amazed to see how printing over previously dyed fabric can yield mesmerizing effects, elevating your artwork to a whole new level.

This class provides 3 hours of instruction time per day with additional studio time for independent study.

Material Notes:

  • The course fee includes all required materials – including a selection of cotton fabric and all necessary dyes, chemicals, and equipment. If you wish to work with additional fabric or scarves, these can be purchased directly from Kathy.

  • Students are welcome to bring their own materials for dyeing, but please note that any fabric used must be scoured, soda soaked, and air dried prior to the workshop. Kathy is available to provide guidance on this process in advance if required.

  • We also encourage students to bring their own silk screens if available, as well as a color wheel for color theory application. After the first class, you are invited to bring items that can add texture to your screens.

  • Bring a notebook and writing instrument for note-taking.

  • We recommend wearing old clothes as this is a hands-on, potentially messy activity. Please bring an apron to protect your clothing.
