Culinary Classroom

Description

This class will feature recipes from Tanya’s cookbook Brown Sugar Kitchen, based on her now-closed Oakland restaurant of the same name. Brown Sugar Kitchen was considered a soul food outpost with a menu featuring a new-style approach to down-home recipes. Think Grits Cakes Benedict, Andouille Gougeres, and Beignets with Chocolate-Chicory Sauce!

Join award winning chef, author and restaurateur Tanya Holland for two special cooking classes featuring recipes from her latest cookbook California Soul, Recipes from a Culinary Journey West. Based in Oakland, California, Tanya has received accolades from the New York Times for representing “a new generation of Black chefs and cookbook authors … reinventing, reinterpreting and reinvigorating what’s thought of as African American food.” Acclaimed for her inventive take on modern soul food, as well as comfort classics, for her Ah Haa classes, Tanya will take full advantage of the Telluride region’s fresh seasonal produce to teach her approach to modern soul food. Specific details on the class curriculum and menus for each class will be announced soon. Participants are welcome to sign up for one or both classes.

For a sneak peek into Tanya’s cooking style and personal journey, look for her cookbook California Soul (Ten Speed Press, 2022). Along with recipes for each season, Tanya profiles ten contemporary Black Californian food makers while celebrating the rich culinary traditions that African Americans brought with them as they migrated West.
